Towards the end of the Iliad, when Achilles is killed by Paris, Ajax and Odysseus fight the Trojans to retrieve Achilles' body and bury it next to Patroclus. While Ajax carries Achilles with his big shield, Odysseus fights the Trojans who want to stop them. They succeed in their mission and organize a funeral for Achilles. After the funeral, they disagree over who should get Achilles' magical armor forged by Hephaestus on Mount Olympus, and an argument ensues. Ajax claims that he deserves the armor, citing his efforts in battle and how strong he is. However, Odysseus with his sweet tongue and Athena's help persuades the council members and the armor is given to him. Distraught by this decision, Ajax committed suicide by stabbing his sword in his own chest. Delphinium flowers turn green from their spilled blood.
